Latest from TV Guide Magazine - 26th December 2010

I always look forward to the December mornings when nominations for the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards are announced. I phone up my favorite stars to offer my congratulations — and land some juicy scoop in return.

This year I was most excited for Glee's Chris Colfer, who at age 20 is up for a Golden Globe (airing January 16 on NBC) and a Screen Actors Guild Award (airing January 30 on TNT and TBS). After coming out of the closet and battling homophobia, will Chris' Kurt finally find love with Blaine on the February 8 Valentine's Day episode? I hear the two will be crooning Robin Thicke's "When I Get You Alone" outside a Gap store as Blaine prepares to profess his love. "There might be a development," hints Chris.

Chris will be competing for a Globe against Modern Family's Eric Stonestreet, who says his Cameron will have his own Valentine's Day issues upon learning that his partner, Mitchell, is being crushed on by his young law firm assistant. "I think it's really cute and call him out on it," says Eric. In another episode, Cam gets angry at Mitchell when he forgets to mail party invitations. Plus, we'll also soon see the return of Cameron's clown alter ego, Fizbo!

You'll never guess where Eric's costar Sofía Vergara (Gloria) was when she learned she was nominated for a Globe. In a cemetery! "It was very creepy. My trailer was parked in front of a tomb," says Sofía (also nominated for a SAG Award). The cemetery story line finds Gloria's husband, Jay, "getting his grave ready for when the time comes," she says. "Jay has ideas for Gloria's burial that clash with her Catholic traditions, so she puts her foot down!"

MF creator Chris Lloyd tells me he will soon cast a brother for Phil. "Phil and his brother communicate largely through insulting and punching each other," says Lloyd. This came as exciting news to SAG nominee Ty Burrell. "I didn't know that," says Ty, suggesting Marty Feldman to play his bro. (Too bad the bug-eyed comic died back in '82.) In another episode, Phil will don a robe and slippers at a day spa where, Ty says, "he gets some sound advice from the gals on how to relate to his wife."

Also spa-bound this winter: The Big Bang Theory's Sheldon, played by Globe nominee Jim Parsons. "The whole gang takes a road trip to a science conference at a spa resort in Big Sur," says Jim. "It's a big enough group that we have to split up into two cars. Penny's in mine until she misbehaves. And Sheldon dictates when the bathroom breaks will occur."

Another road trip finds Globes and SAG nominee Julianna Margulies' Alicia Florrick of The Good Wife heading from Oregon back to Chicago with her gay bro, Owen (Dallas Roberts), who contemplates moving closer to his sis after breaking up with a beau. "This gives Alicia time to talk to her brother about what's going on," says cocreator Michelle King, who will also be giving returning guest star Michael J. Fox's lawyer character a good wife of his own.

Congratulations to all the nominees. I'll see you on the red carpet!

A source who insists they be called "Santittany" tells me that there will be developments between Brittany and Santana. And soon. And that should make Heather Morris herself very happy! We just talked to her about her new Flirt! cosmetics endorsement deal, and when asked about Brittany and Santana hooking up, she said, "Oh God…not that I know of. But I hope so. I miss [Santana]! We have such good stuff. It's not that I don't love mine and Artie's relationship but…" Speaking of that pairing, Lea Michele told us, "I love Artie and Brittany. And oh my God, he sings a song to her in the Valentine's Day episode that is adorable so I'm really loving them right now. " However, when we asked Heather what that song might be, she said, "I don't think I can reveal that. And I actually don't know because the episode just changed." Hmmm…

GLEE - Fans Ask GLEE (Part 2)

Flirt! Cosmetics Interview with Heather Morris

Why did you want to partner with Flirt! as their new Style Ambassador?
I love their products and I love what the brand represents! I think make-up lends us the chance for confidence, to have fun, and to be flirty every day; and that’s why we wear it. FLIRT! products help me do just that, whether I’m sprucing up my eyelashes with a mascara that adds extra fullness and length or freshening up my lips with a sassy red lipcolor. I think FLIRT! is right on point bringing just enough fun and playfulness to every product while still having a sophisticated, yet classy feel. I find nothing more compelling than to be the style ambassador for FLIRT! – a brand that brings all these qualities to life!

How much of your personal style is similar to your character, Brittany, on Glee?
I think that Brittany is every bit as much of a performer as I am, and in that sense, we’re completely alike! As we all know, Brittany is bound by her uniform, therefore has not very many means to express herself stylishly! But, like me, she values keeping a fresh face with just the right hint of make-up to accentuate her favorite features. A hint of rosy blush on the apples of the cheeks, mascara for extra long, lashes, and a thin lined eye to make my eyes pop are just some little things that I like to steal from her style booklet ;)

What are you most looking forward to in the Flirt! Spring Collection?
I love make-up and especially like to play up my eyes and lips. My current favorite products in the FLIRT! line are the Opening Line Liquid Liner and High Wattage Intense & Creamy Lipcolor in Tootsie. Opening Line Liquid Liner from FLIRT! is my go to choice for getting a dramatic lined look to the eyes – one of my favorite beauty looks for a night out on the town. High Wattage Intense & Creamy Lipcolor in Tootsie is my favorite red lipstick – it stays put on my lips through any performance but has a light, creamy finish that’s very pretty and flirty.

What are your favorite Beauty Products?
I am definitely a lashes girl and there is one new product in the line that has already become my favorite new beauty secret! I can’t wait to share it will you in February!

The Holiday season, is right around the corner. Will you be giving any FLIRT! gifts this year?
Of course! Nail Color is the new it accessory of the moment and I love the new FLIRT! Nail Trios! The colors are all so fun, bright and playful. I’ll be gifting these to all of my friends and castmates this year.

New Ryan Murphy Interview (Very long and detailed)

Before creating the cultural phenomenon called Glee, 45-year-old, Indianapolis-born, Irish Catholic Ryan Murphy was probably best known as the writer/producer of the plastic surgery show Nip/Tuck. When Fox approached him to create a musical series that could air after their American Idol franchise, no one gave his hybrid creation a chance, especially given the high-profile flops of such previous efforts as Cop Rock and Pushing Daisies. But Glee proved to be the exception to the rule, launching a cottage industry that has racked up some amazing stats: 19.5 million singles and 7.7 million albums sold worldwide, 93 Hot 100 chart entries (second all-time to Elvis), with all eight album releases debuting in the Top 10, topped off by a pair of Grammy nominations. The show has been a boon to a beleaguered biz, and its creator a one-man advocate for such unlikely causes as arts education, gay bullying and rights of the handicapped, while cooking up a full-blown Broadway musical every week, and one of the most consistently entertaining shows on network TV. Of course, after choosing to speak to HITS’ own chorus-line hoofer Roy Trakin, it was more like getting a slushee in the face while roaming the halls of McKinley High.

I’ve been insisting Glee is the most influential musical show ever on network television in terms of record sales, surpassing American Idol and maybe even going back to The Monkees.I believe so, and I’m proud of that fact.

I know the pair of Grammy nominations, including one for “Don’t Stop Believin’” mean a lot to you, too. That was our first song performed by the cast, from the pilot, and the reason why this show caught on. After the premiere aired in May, it sold all summer long, then we came back on in September. It’s the first time that song has received a nomination. To be able to do that for the Journey guys and Steve Perry, has been amazing. It’s exciting for us to honor them in that way.

Which comes first, the songs or the narrative? The plots always come first. Every episode has a theme, even if the viewer doesn’t realize it. It really is like a Broadway musical, where the songs move the characters and the storyline forward. That being said, after we come up with the story, I go away and work on what songs we’re going to use. I’m working on an episode right now where I’ve changed the songs four times…to the irritation of my music people. I want to get the right tone and express what the character is going through within the story. It’s a very strange process because we use both old and new music, though this year we’ve been doing more current hits. Kids like to see the songs they know and love interpreted instantly.

The beauty of Glee is the way it tries to unify this fragmented pop music world into the ‘60s golden era of Top 40 as a melting pot of the best of the genres. It’s just such a mysterious process by which the show has taken off. I don’t really understand how we do it, and I don’t understand its success. But it’s a very gratifying thing. It’s very enjoyable.

TV musicals like Cop Rock and Pushing Daisies have proven to be unsuccessful in the past. Why has Glee succeeded? This is a show that appeals to all different demographics. What makes the show work is, it has a huge amount of heart, and a core of optimism at its center. By the end of the hour, it touches you and makes you feel good. If you look at the tradition of musicals, they usually flourished in dark economic times, like the Depression, where they provided a panacea.

Was Glee always intended by Fox as a companion to American Idol? When I first pitched it, I knew they’d been looking for something for years to go behind American Idol that had a musical theme. I had lunch with Simon Cowell not too long ago, and he told me he worked on something also. It premiered after the American Idol finale. The thing that shocked everybody is how it has won the night this fall when it aired alone.

In a world of cookie-cutter TV shows and production by committee, you are the auteur of Glee. It seems very personal. It’s written by the three of us, Ian Brennan, Brad Falchuk and myself. I think it’s personal to all of us. I would never claim to be the only voice. But the themes of the show are personal to me. I was never really an outcast in high school; I was more popular than that. But I do believe in the spirit and power of the underdog, and perseverance. That is a real belief I’ve lived my life by, and in that sense, there’s a lot of me in there.

The albums are hitting the chart one after the other. Are you concerned about overexposure?I don’t think so. I think we’re going to stick to longer albums rather than the shorter EPs in the future. I know we have an album coming out in January tied to our Super Bowl episode, featuring our mash-ups, which we’ve never really released before. The thing about this show is, it won’t go on forever. I certainly won’t be doing it that much longer.

How long can Glee continue?
I do think at some point those kids have to graduate and move on. The show could run forever. There’s always a new crop of kids who can come in and populate that Glee club. At that point, somebody else will be making those decisions. This year, we brought in a couple of new people, including Darren Criss, who is an instant star. And I think that shows its power. The show will last as long as there’s talent, and I think there’s an abundance of it out there.

Have you thought about starting your own label to develop some of the talent you’ve introduced on the show?
Rob Stringer, my good friend and buddy at Sony Music, has talked to me about forming a label, which I think I will do. I would be excited about that. It’s an area of interest for me. I’m a fan of music, and I feel very lucky to have a show like this, where I can showcase talent I see on audition reels and say, “I believe in you,” and then you get to watch that person’s career take off and their dreams come true.

Glee has offered a ray of hope to a beleaguered music business. How important is developing new talent and selling albums for you?To me, that’s the best part of the job. For example, I’ve always been a huge fan of Florence + the Machine, and I love “Dog Days Are Over.” After we did the song, her album vaulted into the Top 5 at iTunes for the first time. There’s a term for it… It’s called the “Glee Effect,” when a song we do re-enters or climbs the chart. My relatives in Indiana or grandmothers who watch the show aren’t familiar with these songs, and this is the first time they’re hearing them. And maybe it interests them enough to buy the original. That’s why the labels and producers are increasingly coming to me pitching their artists and songs. It plays into the show’s themes, what it’s about—underdogs and discovering talent.

Are you open to those kinds of pitches? My music supervisor, P.J. Bloom, comes to me with music, and I listen to it. That’s usually how I do it.

The show’s 8 p.m. time period tends to guarantee a young audience. How do you feel about the criticism of the show’s sexual content and double entendres?
When we premiered, we were at 9 p.m. and designed for an adult audience, but kids still found it. The show was never designed for kids; it was supposed to be like Election. One of the caveats when the network asked us to go to 8 was that the content wouldn’t change. I began hearing from parents, and I started listening to them, which led me to change the material after the first five episodes, which were a little bit more risqué. I am conscious that there are younger eyes on the screen. We’ve removed a lot of that in-your-face, double-entendre stuff, and I don’t think the show has suffered at all. Parents, it’s now safe to watch with your kid. I do want young people to watch, because the lessons are so great.

Did you mind when Rolling Stone, as a compliment, called Glee the gayest show on TV?I think it’s a very glib, lazy thing to say. I really don’t care what they say, but I don’t think that’s true. Out of 13 regulars on our show, only one is a gay character. But I understand people’s needs to label.

What I like is the way you pitch the show between camp and serious emotion. That’s what good musicals do. They make you feel something.

The show is successful all over the world. It may well be bigger internationally than it is in the States. We’re doing a total of eight shows in London and Ireland to show our fans there we care about them. All of them sold out within two minutes.

Glee: The Movie seems a natural, no?I would never do it as a story; I might do it as a live concert thing.

How do you manage to produce an entire Broadway musical for 22 weeks?
I think it’s the hardest show to produce on television, because musicals take a lot of planning. We have a fantastic crew who work between 18-20 hours a day, and at this point of the season, are really looking forward to a vacation. We have great support from our network and studio. For everyone who works on it, including me, it really is a labor of love, and everyone realizes it won’t be like this forever. Sometimes, you just want to pull your hair out. That there’s been such an overwhelming response to it around the world… Whoever thought this show that everybody said would not work, would go on to win all these awards, and to get two Grammy nominations? That’s amazing to me.

Did you foresee the show being this successful?I felt that it was risky. I directed the pilot and I thought it was really, really strong. I believed in it, and so did the cast and crew. I never thought we’d get a full season order, let alone this. So I’m pleasantly shocked by it all. Every day.

Who do you think has the best chance for individual stardom among the cast members?
That’s not really my job. They’re just on my show. They all have album deals with Sony and Columbia. They all have an option of doing a solo album, if they want. I won’t be involved in the production of those records. The past year has been a whirlwind for all of us, and we’re all just beginning to figure out what we want the next two years of our lives to be like.

Does the music on Glee represent your personal tastes?I wouldn’t say they’re all my favorite songs. They work for the story. But I will say I won’t put anything on the show I don’t like. That I don’t hear or love or want to interpret or I think is good for the character.

Chris Colfer’s character is a rare thing on network TV. Do you think he could be a mainstream pop star? What Chris really wants to do is write and direct. I think he can do whatever he wants. He’s so young, and he has such poise. I wish a character like that was on TV when I was a teenager. He walked into the casting room with no real experience, opened his mouth to sing, and we decided to rewrite a character and put him in the cast because his talent was so special and original.

Any message you’d like to address to the music industry?
I have such gratitude for all the artists and all the labels. So many wonderful people have given us music, from
Beyonce to the Rolling Stones to Paul McCartney to Rihanna to Barbra Streisand. Because they understand, at its core, the show is about arts education. It really says the arts matter, and since Glee has been on the air, there has been a resurgence in this around the country. We see it with actual donations and Glee clubs starting. And I’m just thrilled because the show supports the arts, and that’s good for everybody.

One last thing. Did you ever think of turning Nip/Tuck into a musical? No.

Chris Colfer's New Interview with Entertainment Weekly

Glee‘s Chris Colfer now has more to be glee-ful about than a phenomenal second season: He’s been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in TV Series, Mini-Series, or Made-for-TV Movie. Shortly after finding out about his nod, Colfer rang EW to talk about the Globes, as well as his upcoming foray into movies.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So how did you find out? Were you awake?
CHRIS COLFER: I woke up with a phone call. I was not awake for the announcement. My publicist called me at 5 a.m., and I’ve been wide awake since.

Have you celebrated yet?
No not really! For one, all my friends are on the show and they’re working today! And all my family lives four hours away so I have no one to celebrate with. So I might go get some frozen yogurt and have a party by myself.

That feels kinda sad.
It’s sad, Tim. You can say it! [Laughs] It’s sad and pathetic.

Is it sweet to get nominated for the bullying storyline that’s been such a big part of this season?
Oh yeah. The storyline has been meaningful for so many people. It validates it as much as the feedback we’ve gotten from the people it’s affected and people that needed to see it.

Have you talked to your fellow acting nominees, Matthew Morrison, Lea Michele, and Jane Lynch?
I saw Matt, Jane, and Lea this morning and I tackled all of them.

Jane is like 6 feet tall! That’s impressive!
Oh yeah. She could take me and she has before. The only person I’m actually eligible to take down is Lea. She’s tiny but she’s powerful.

Are you working today?
I’m not, because I’m at the other school [Dalton Academy] so I only work once a week rather than everyday all day like the others do.

Is that weird now to not be working so much?
It was a nice break for the first two days, and now I feel like a housewife. I don’t know what to do with myself! I literally will sometimes sit at home and twitch. I’ve run all my errands, paid all my bills, seen all my doctors. There’s literally nothing else for me to do. I don’t think I could ever retire.

Maybe some pottery classes?
Oh, I’m already there.

You just wrote a screenplay, right? The teen comedy Struck by Lightning?
I did yes!

Can you tell me a little bit about it?
I can say that it’s probably not as good as Inception but it’s probably better than Sharktopus. It’s very strange that I’m actually talking about it now because it’s been a very secret project. I hate the whole taboo of actors that write and I never wanted to seem like that.

Will the character be different than Kurt?
It will be very different yes. It will be someone I wished I was in high school. And here will be no singing and dancing allowed.

Cory Monteith Hints Possibility of Rachel and Finn Reunion

Cory Monteith has given a clue of what the future holds for Rachel and Finn on "Glee". Making an appearance at the 2010 Hollywood Style Awards on Sunday, December 12, the 28-year-old hinted about the possibility of his character and Lea Michele's Rachel rekindling their romance, and teased that Finn "might forgive" Rachel.

"[Finn] is pretty hurt, but they were each other's first love. He might forgive her," Cory, who plays Owen in Selena Gomez-starring film "Monte Carlo", explained to Hollywood Life. However, when asked further about what he would do in Finn's shoes, he answered, "That's a loaded question." He went on to stress, "Forgiveness is simple."

Rachel and Finn's romance aside, "Glee" recent production has been canceled due to the cast member's sickness. According to Entertainment Weekly, several members of the cast were coming down with tonsillitis. However, the site also revealed that production will resume on Monday, December 13, adding that the scenes planned for December 10 will be rescheduled for January.

Confirming the report, Dianna Agron, who plays Quinn Fabray on the series, tweeted, "Note to self...should have gotten a flu shot. In bed, hoping that medicine, soup, my computer and a marathon of movies will be the cure." Meanwhile, Kevin McHale, who is famous for his portrayal of Artie Abrams on the musical series, wrote on his Twitter page, "So over being sick. This whole staying in bed thing seemed fun the 1st few days haha. On the mend!"

Chris Colfer - The New Overachiever (New Interview and Photo Shoot)

“Oooooh, how do I answer this one?” says Chris Colfer, the youngest star on FOX’s boundary-pushing, musical number-heavy cultural phenomenon, Glee. The question: If you could put together the playlist for an episode, which artists would you choose to include? “I’d love to do more Lady Gaga songs, and some Abba,” he says, following a considerable pause. “And, knowing me, I’d choose all kinds of theater.” Knowing his fans, that wouldn’t be a problem.

Colfer has garnered considerable praise for his portrayal of Kurt Hummel, an outwardly strong yet inwardly fragile gay teenager navigating the hornet’s nest that is the show’s William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio. He received a 2010 Emmy nomination for his performance (“I’m still in shock,” he says) and was quickly elevated to bonafide role model-status by Glee’s devout followers. “I never thought I’d play a character who could inspire so many people,” he says. “It’s a good thing I’ve gone through so many of the same things Kurt is going through—I definitely approach his character from a personal place.”

Raised in Clovis, California, the 20-year-old actor has always had one eye on show business. “I grew up doing community theater,” he says. “I was very, very, very active in high school.” The series, Colfer’s first professional acting gig, came quickly. He graduated from high school in June 2008 and started filming that September, which he’s been doing—almost nonstop—ever since. “Glee is very time consuming,” he says. “We don’t get hiatuses like other shows because as soon as we wrap, we go on a music tour.” Although he cares deeply for the show, Colfer isn’t without other goals. “I would love to be the head of a studio one day,” he says, smiling. “But not an evil studio—a really nice one.”

Gwyneth Paltrow Confirms 'Glee' Return

There was no telling whether Holly Holiday would be back on McKinley High but now it is confirmed. Gwyneth Paltrow who slipped into the character earlier this season would reprise the "Glee" role although she did not share when and for how many episodes.

The actress was lauded for her performance as substitute teacher in place of Mr. Schue who was sick. She performed the tamer version of Cee-Lo's "F**k You" which the original artist called "awesome". Then she joined the New Direction in a big number which mashed up Rihanna's "Umbrella" and the classic "Singin' in the Rain". The episode posted a 7% ratings increase from the previous week.

Paltrow herself seemed to enjoy the stint for she told Access Hollywood on Sunday, December 12 that being on "Glee" was "the best job ever".

Meanwhile, "Glee" is preparing for the episode that will air after Super Bowl on February 6. The filming was scheduled to take place over the weekend but it was temporarily shut down when a number of crew including star Dianna Agron had tonsillitis. Filming is expected to resume on Monday, December 13.

Glee cast gets sick, production delayed

Production on the Fox hit Glee has hit a snag or, more appropriately, a virus. EW has learned that due to several members of the cast coming down with herpes tonsillitis, production on the series has been canceled for today. The cast and crew are currently in the midst of shooting their big post-Super Bowl episode and were set to film one of the biggest musical numbers this evening on location. But don’t you worry, Gleeks: Production will resume on Monday and the scenes planned for tonight will be rescheduled for January.

Glee Fans Want a Romantic Rendezvous Underneath Mistletoe with Darren Criss

As the holiday season swept its way through McKinley High on the December 7 episode of Glee, Broadway.com asked readers which Glee star they would most like to find themselves standing next to underneath some mistletoe.

The results are in, and fans said they would most like to plant a kiss on newest cast member Darren Criss (who plays Dalton Academy singing stud Blaine). Criss, who performed the flirtatious duet "Baby It's Cold Outside" alongside Chris Colfer (Kurt) on the holiday episode, landed in first place with 24% of votes.

Second place went to a cast member who's not a part of the McKinley student body, Matthew Morrison as Mr. Schuester. Twelve percent of readers said they'd like to smooch the Broadway veteran of South Pacific, The Light in the Piazza and Hairspray.

The guys of Glee continued to rule the poll as Mark Salling (Puck) landed in third place. Ten percent of fans said they would like to pucker up with Puck.

Ed O'Neill denies saying Jane Lynch didn't deserve her Emmy

In a statement released exclusively to EW, Modern Family star Ed O’Neill denies that he said that Glee actress Jane Lynch did not deserve the Emmy for her role as Sue Sylvester. O’Neill was quoted in a TV Guide Canada story as saying, “I love Jane, honestly I do. I’m dying to star in one of Christopher Guest’s movies alongside her, but I don’t think she should have gotten the Emmy for that part. [Sue Sylvester] is just a one-note character.” He then is quoted singing the praises of his onscreen wife, played by Sofia Vergara.

O’Neill’s statement reads in full: “Last week I spoke to a group of journalists and one quoted me supposedly saying of Jane Lynch, ‘I don’t think she should have gotten the Emmy for that part.’ I never said those words and transcripts of the press conference attest to that fact. Of course I root for my dear friends Sofia Vergara and Julie Bowen (and all of my colleagues on our show) at Emmy time, but I absolutely never said, nor do I believe that Jane — whom I think is an enormous talent — was undeserving of the award. I reached out to her yesterday to ensure she knew I’d been misquoted but I wanted to clear this up publicly as well.” (A rep for Lynch told E! Online the actress had “let [the issue] go.”) TV Guide Canada did not respond to a request for comment at the time of this posting.

ETA: His real quote:

"I’m one of Jane Lynch’s biggest fans. I love Jane Lynch. She is a genius. But at the same time I said ‘Sofia could win’ because … and I’ve only seen Glee a couple of … I’ve only seen Glee once. But I thought Jane’s role is rather one-dimensional. It’s kind of strident. It’s always kind of the same. I’ve seen her be much better. So I thought ‘Sofia’s funnier,’ and I think she is in these two comparative roles. Anyway, Jane won. But I was hoping that Sofia would."

Dianna Agron fires manager and agent

"Glee" star Dianna Agron has fired her manager and agent after disagreements over her career, Page Six has learned. Agron, who plays Quinn Fabray on the hit Fox series, parted ways with manager Lena Roklin of Luber Roklin and with the Gersh Agency. She's now represented by agent Thor Bradwell at William Morris Endeavor.

A source told us, "She is delighted with the success of 'Glee' and her role. But she parted ways with them around a month ago. Dianna has been working as an actress since she was a child, she is smart and has a strong grasp on where her career is going." We previously reported the "Glee" cast was unhappy with its royalty deal from sales of music from the show. But Agron said she was happy with a recent racy GQ shoot which sparked controversy. A rep for Agron declined to comment. Roklin's office confirmed it no longer works with Agron, and Gersh said it doesn't represent her.

Darren Criss Interview with Elle

ELLE: Did you grow up in a musical family?
DC: Sort of. My mom picked up the cello in her forties, after her sons became interested in music. I played almost my whole life, but my brother was the asshole who picked up an instrument for fun in high school and then far surpassed me.

ELLE: Does he sing too?
DC: Yeah, he sings. He’s in the band Freelance Whales. They play everything—banjo, bass, guitar, drums, and they all sing so they’re an awesome band to see live. Plug, pluggy-plug, plug.

ELLE: So we know you’re musically inclined. When did you decide to act?
DC: I wanted to be an actor after seeing Robin Williams as the Genie in Aladdin.

ELLE: Wait, you wanted to be an actor because of a cartoon character?
DC: Absolutely! I saw it in theaters about twelve times, and I knew who Robin Williams was. So asked my mom, “What does that guy do? What’s his job?” Because for all I know he’s a fireman. When she told me, I thought, “Whatever that actor thing is, I want to do it.”

ELLE: Now that you’re an actor—on a hit show, no less—what’s the best part of it all?
DC: Being on Glee is just a really cool presence to have in pop culture. We all want to be doing something that’s greater than ourselves, and the show’s become such a cool soapbox with lot to say; it really speaks out for gay teens and the LGBT community.

ELLE: What strikes me is that Blaine’s a gay teen that’s so comfortable and unfazed in who he is that he makes a good foil to Kurt, who has had to struggle with his sexuality at school.
DC: You know, everybody on the show has been a loner or an outcast in some way—whether they have issues about their childhood, their body image, a disability, everyone is in their own corner, being drawn out together. Kurt is, you know, the gay teen, and up to this point he’s never actually had another other gay male teen to relate to. The fact that this character exists now is awesome, and it’s a dream come true to play him.

ELLE: How was your audition? What song did you sing?
DC: I totally prepped out because my character goes to an all-boys school, and then I sang “…Baby One More Time.”

ELLE: And your character was introduced singing Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream,” so you already had a whole gender-inversion thing going. That’s a happy coincidence.
DC: Yeah, I really lucked out with that song.

Chris Colfer Backstage at the Jay Leno Show

Chris Colfer talks about Brittana's future and working with Jane Lynch

Want the inside scoop on what’s in store for Glee’s Brittany (Heather Morris) and Santana (Naya Rivera)?

Yeah, me too. That’s why I couldn’t resist asking Chris Colfer, who plays Kurt, about our favorite Cheerios when I interviewed him for our brother site, AfterElton.com.

Unfortunately, he swears that none of the actors has any idea what’s in store for their characters. He doesn’t even know if Kurt and Blaine (Darren Criss) are going to be BFs or BFFs, let alone whether Brittany and Santana are going to take their relationship beyond its current decidedly unsettled state.

Which doesn’t mean he doesn’t have an opinion about it. “I know (AfterEllen.com readers) want to hear about Brittany and Santana,” he told me. “I think the Brittany/Santana storyline is a lot of what helps make Glee still a musical comedy. It’s pretty funny that these two high school girls constantly make references that they are a couple, and who knows what they are really thinking when they do it?”

What Colfer really likes, he said, is the way the Brittany/Santana and Kurt/Blaine storylines turn gender stereotypes inside out. “I think Blaine and Kurt’s relationship is there for the uplifting, inspirational message,” he said, “and then there are the girls for the comic relief. And it’s really very funny, because it’s usually the other way around.

“The other way the genders are reversed, and it’s interesting, is that usually it’s the guys who are much more promiscuous.” He contrasted that with the “tease of a relationship” between Kurt and Blaine, who haven’t even kissed yet. “Maybe Brittany and Santana are just so sexual they don’t know how to have a relationship with anyone that isn’t sexual,” he said.

Bottom line, though? Colfer swears no one knows where it will all end up — and that might include show creator Ryan Murphy. “I actually saw [him] last night, and I asked him [about Kurt and Blaine’s future], and he wouldn’t tell me,” he said. “Which makes me think that he doesn’t even really know, so we’ll see. I think they’re kind of milking it for what it’s worth, and then seeing where it goes.”

He also said that favorite real-life lesbian Jane Lynch is the hardest person for him to work with in the cast, but not because they don’t get along. No, it’s an entirely different problem.

“Jane Lynch is challenging to work with because she’s so funny,” he said. “It’s a miracle every time I get through a line. We have so many outtakes of me and Jane, and we are just cracking up because she’s so hysterical.”

Ryan Murphy Talks 'Glee' Super Bowl and Spring Episodes

"Glee" is taking a holiday break and will only return in February with the highly-anticipated Super Bowl episode. While preview is not immediately available, co-creator Ryan Murphy is willing to share a bit of what fans can expect upon the return in an interview with Rolling Stone.

First of all, Murphy would like to explain why "Glee" takes a long break while most of other shows return in January. "I always think it's good when the show goes off air and make people miss it a little bit," he said, adding that there will be two episodes airing in one week, one which follows the Super Bowl episode on Sunday, and another on the regular Tuesday slot.

Regarding what to expect overall, Murphy said, "I'm excited about our spring season because we're going back to the earlier Glee episodes. We really love all of our characters and the soap opera aspects of the show and now that we're cooking we'll be featuring those great stories in the back half."

Murphy went on confirming that "Thriller", Katie Couric and a big Sue Sylvester blowout will occur in the Super Bowl episode. Calling the "Thriller" details "top secret", he hinted, "All I'll say about that is that we're putting a new spin on it that I think people will really like." He, however, debunked the story that Couric would do "Tea for Two".

Super Bowl Spoilers!

Blaine, Kurt to Deliver Super Destiny’s Child Cover

Are the Dalton Academy Warblers about to fall on hard financial times? Sources confirm to me exclusively that Glee’s Darren Criss-fronted group will belt out a cover of the Destiny’s Child tune “Bills Bills Bills” during the show’s post-Super Bowl episode on Feb. 6.

There’s no word why Blaine, Kurt & Co. will be grumbling about paying their “telephone and automo’ bills,” particularly considering the special hour will focus on rival school McKinley High’s football championship. Maybe Kurt wants to cheer on his former classmates but can’t afford the steep ticket price? I’m just spit-balling here. If you’ve got a better theory, hit the comments section!

E! Interview with Harry Shum Jr.

Glee's Harry Shum Jr. Talks Rachel-Finn Breakup Backlash and a Possible Mike-Brittany Pairing
Fear not, Finnchel fans! The producers and cast have heard your howls of woe in response to last week's big breakup between Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) and Finn (Cory Monteith). I just chatted with Mike Chang himself, aka the extremely cool Harry Shum Jr., and he says, "[Executive producer] Brad Falchuk, when we were filming, came up to me and was like 'Wow, we're getting hit really hard right now—people are going nuts over it.' " So what's next for Finn and Rachel, not to mention Mike Chang and his lady Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz)? Here's what Harry spilled on showmances, the Super Bowl episode and how he got his supersexy abs:

As far as the Finnchel breakup goes, Harry tells me that with those two apart, "At least some fans get Puckleberry for a little bit right? Maybe? Maybe Puckleberry? Maybe I don't know, it might happen, it's a possibility." (How do you guys feel about that? Yea or nay?)

What about Mike Chang's own relationship? Are things steady with Tina, or might she be making eyes at another New Directions fella? Says Harry, "Things could always resurface, especially in high school...in the last episode where Artie (Kevin McHale) and Tina start seeing one little wrong look, they start thinking, 'OK, what's going on? What's going on? Are they back together?' and you know anything can happen."

And if Tina and Mike do break up, Harry'd be interested in exploring things with Heather Morris' Brittany, saying, "Everyone's rooting for Brittany. Mike and Brittany...I think it's great. They make great dance partners and you haven't really seen them, their relationship outside of that."

Speaking of dance, we'll see Mike Chang's dancing feet at work in the Super Bowl episode! I asked about the possible "Thriller" performance and he played coy, saying only "maybe" when I asked if he'd ever done any Michael Jackson moves—but he did promise, "The scenes are going to be Super Bowl epic. We're doing some crazy stuff...Yesterday we worked a good 16-, 17-hour day. We were going hard, and it's going to be a really awesome fun episode...we're doing some awesome musical numbers."

Last but not least, how did he get those marvelous abs we've seen on the show and in Yellow magazine? Says Shum, "I went on YouTube and put in 'ab workout,' and I looked for the best ones, the ones that had millions of hits, and I was like, I think I'm going to do that for like a couple weeks. See how that works out."

Mark Wahlberg: I have Never Seen 'Glee'

Pausing for a few moments to sign autographs at the Mann Chinese Theater, actor, rapper and former Calvin Klein model Mark Wahlberg says he's never seen Glee, though he hears it's great.

Jane Lynch Responds to Ed O'Neill' Diss

Since Ed O'Neill decided he was the best judge of who does—and does not—deserve their Emmy, we've been wondering what Glee's bitchy Sue Sylvester has to say about it.

After all, she's not only played by the fab Jane Lynch—but Lynch herself was specifically O'Neill's target.

The jealous douche had the gall to say that his Modern Family costar, Sofia Vergara, deserved the Emmy, not Jane. He said Lynch's character was "one-note," among other insults.

Well, what does J.L. have to say about it all?

Not much.

Look, we love us some Lynch over here at Awful Truth, so much so, we ignored O'Neill's jealous tirade at first. I mean, isn't it obvious?

Ed was never nominated for an Emmy for Married With Children. Add to that little hurt the fact that every other cast member of Modern Family was nominated for an Emmy this year—except Ed.

Easy to see where this guy's head is at.

So where's Jane's?

We finally decided to call her rep and say we were so repulsed by Ed's fat mouth, we just had to find out what the divine Sue was thinking.

Here was Camp Lynch's remarks:

"Thanks for being repulsed," Jane's rep emailed us. "But let it go, that's what we're doing."

And then the rep added one of those adorable smiley faces that usually make us want to puke. But this time, it just made us laugh.

Do you think that's what was missing from Ed's statements? A smiley face?

I'm sure he just forgot to add one.

New Spoilers and Scoops from Kristin

@JackieG927 (via Twitter): To offset my anger at the Finchel breakup can you find out something about Quinn & Puck? Please!!Hate to be the bearer of bad (worse?) news, but the fantabulous Harry Shum Jr. (Mike Chang) stopped by our studio a few days ago (story/video coming soon) and he told me that the teeny silver lining of the Finn and Rachel break up is that "at least we'll get some Puckleberry." Whether that means as friends, friends with benefits or more remains to be seen, but it certainly sounds as though Puck and Rachel may have something naughty in the works. As always, my shoulder is here for you to cry on!

Stephanie in New York: Finn/Rachel fans need some scoop. We were totally blindsided by the breakup! There are so many rumors floating right now, so help us out. Any hope for Finn and Rachel in the Christmas episode? In the near future? There is tons of Rachel and Finn coming up on Glee, but unfortunately for you Finnchel fans, it's all Rachel and Finn angst. (Sad trombone.) Trust us, in the grand scheme of TV things, going on a break and exchanging longing, lonely glances across the choir room is not the worst thing that could happen to a couple. As for the Christmas episode Rachel is headlining not one but two sad holiday songs: "Merry Christmas, Darling" and "Last Christmas," so prepare to suffer through some juicy Finnchel angst before it comes time for the nearly inevitable Finnchel reconnection.

@dancelivesing (via Twitter): Ryan Murphy said Finn and Rachel would not breakup this season. For what it's worth, I'm told the plan did change slightly from what it was in the very beginning, but the writers did (sorta) address the voice of the fans with this exchange in the episode: Rachel: "You said you'd never break up with me!" Finn: "I never thought you'd make me feel like this." See, fans, Finn and Rachel know just how you feel!

Jane Lynch Reveals Katie Couric’s ‘Glee’ Song

Katie Couric will be showing off her dancing skills when she comes to “Glee.”

Access Hollywood caught up series star Jane Lynch at the Trevor LIVE benefit in Los Angeles on Sunday, where she dished details on the “CBS Evening News” anchor’s upcoming cameo.

“I haven’t shot with her yet, but yeah, she’s going to be in our Super Bowl episode,” Jane revealed to Access.

“She’s also doing a dance with [Matthew Morrison]. She’ll be doing ‘Tea for Two,’” Jane continued, referring to the jazz standard from the 1925 musical “No, No, Nanette,” which Doris Day also sang on the big screen in “Tea for Two.”

Adding, “She’s a Gleek! She has been since the beginning.”

Katie’s post-Super Bowl “Glee” episode will air on February 6.

Tina, Mercedes and Artie tease 2011's episodes

Digitalspy chatted to Tina, Mercedes and Artie at the Tron Legacy premiere.

Ed O'Neill says Jane Lynch doesn't deserve her Emmy

Ed O’Neill loves to tell stories. The actor, who plays Jay Pritchett on Modern Family, had international TV critics in stitches during a recent Los Angeles press conference held just off the ABC sitcom’s Fox film set.

He reminisced with journalists from South America, Europe, Australia and Canada about how he misses the track suits Jay wore during much of Season 1, and described — much to the delight of two writers from Brazil — how he has become a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after two decades.

But the veteran actor, who is seeing sitcom success with Modern Family, is dead serious when he says that Jane Lynch didn’t deserve to win a Best Actress Emmy for her role on Fox’s Glee.

“I love Jane, honestly I do,” the Youngstown, Ohio, native said, sitting forward. “I’m dying to star in one of Christopher Guest’s movies alongside her, but I don’t think she should have gotten the Emmy for that part. (Sue Sylvester) is just a one-note character.”

Instead, and perhaps unsurprisingly, the actor who once played “briefly, very briefly” for the Pittsburgh Steelers thinks the trophy should have been awarded to co-star Sofia Vergara. “Sofia is just so, so funny,” O’Neill explained with a twinkle in his eye. “I don’t think people realize how hilarious she is. She’s so sharp with her wit, it’s amazing.”

Also amazing to the stocky actor is the second-time success he’s enjoying with Modern Family. O’Neill wasn’t looking to return to sitcoms after playing Al Bundy for 10 years on Married … With Children, initially turning down Family creators Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd when they approached him with the role.

“Then I read the script, and I said to myself, ‘Oh God, this is so good.’ I put the script down and came back and read it a second time and thought, ‘I have to do this.’” But when his manager tracked down Levitan and Lloyd, they had bad news. Craig T. Nelson was in negotiations for the gig. Luckily for O’Neill, Nelson dropped out and jumped over to Parenthood, leaving the door open for him to snap it up.

We’re glad he did.

Cory Monteith takes role after 'Gossip Girl,' Selena Gomez project

Cory Monteith has established himself in Hollywood thanks to his role as Finn Hudson on Fox's "Glee" -- now, the actor is expanding his horizons with a new project from Fox 2000. According to a new report from Entertainment Weekly, Monteith is set to star in what is being described as a "workplace comedy," though very little has been made available in the way of details.

Although he appeared in numerous small projects before landing his breakout role, Monteith does have one other major film on his radar -- teen comedy "Monte Carlo," which is set to hit theaters this spring. Cory starred in the film alongside Selena Gomez and "Gossip Girl" actress Leighton Meester.

Lea Michele Says She’ll Come Back As A Teacher

It sounds like graduation day might be coming early for the cast of Glee, but instead of fretting about potentially being written off the show in 2012, Lea Michele is positive she’ll stay with Glee against all odds. “Maybe I would come back as a teacher on Glee,” Lea, 24, told HollywoodLife.com on Dec. 2 at Billboard’s Fifth Annual Women in Music Event in NYC.

In a recent interview with Australia’s News Limited, Glee Ryan Murphy said: “Every year we’re going to populate a new group. There’s nothing more depressing than a high schooler with a bald spot.”

But that doesn’t seem to concern Lea, 24, at the moment. She’s just focused on her current success and the show’s TWO Grammy nominations for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals and Best Compilation Soundtrack Album For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media.

“We work really hard [on our music],” Lea said. “So to get these accolades is so great. It doesn’t feel real yet. I just found out this morning. Unbelieveable, like a dream!”

Lea is so happy with her situation that she wouldn’t even dream of putting out her own solo album at the moment.

“I’m a singer, so it feels like a natural thing that I would do, but right now Glee is my number one priority,” Lea told us. “My cast, my character — we have our fourth volume out right now, so I’m going to take my time with that. I feel really satisfied right now as a recording artist. … There’s lots of things I’d like to do. I just want to, as an actor, continue to play roles that challenge me and that I enjoy.”
