Naya Rivera Interview at the At&t Store in San Jose

'Glee' Star Naya Rivera Talks About Meeting Fans In Bay Area

Glee's co-creator/exec producer Brad Falchuk discusses the finale and what's in store for season 3

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Did you always think New Directions would lose?
BRAD FALCHUK: Yeah. They’re not ready yet. I think there’s something about them winning that deflates things oddly. We knew what was going to happen. It’s not even that they lost but they didn’t even make that top 10. That’s how unprepared they were. That’s how unfocused they were. I kinda liked that. To me, if they make it to the top 10 after they’re so clearly not focused, they’re clearly not invested because they all have other things going on — it would have been a little disingenuous.

Why are Sam and Mercedes hiding their relationship?
We’re gonna have to wait and discover that. They have their reasons. That was something that was born out of the prom episode. We felt the chemistry there.

Quinn seemed so over the Finn break-up by the end of the show. Was that an act?
It was all in her hair, man. It really was. All the bad juju was in her hair and she cut it all off and everything got better. It wasn’t that she got over it all but I think she’s just grown up. Every culture has a ritual like that where you make some sort of physical change and it transforms you inside too.

It seemed like you were planting seeds of Sunshine Corazon returning to McKinley?
Unsure yet. We have some big plans for next year. It’s not worth getting into them because who knows? When we talk in September, everything I say will be different anyway. Don’t even bother. It’s a waste of time. That’s how we work. We have ideas and then we also wanna leave some room for a little discovery.

There was a lot of talk in the finale about graduating and going to New York. Does that mean this is the last season of Rachel, Finn, Kurt, etc.?
Oh, we’ll get into all that later.

Would you ever think of doing a spin-off with Rachel, Kurt, Blaine and Finn living in New York?
I don’t know. Like I said, I am basking in the glow of finishing. Talking about starting is way too soon.

But you all at least have a plan for the issue of most of the characters graduating?
Yes, we have plans definitely. This is not a willy nilly thing. We have plans for stuff and it’s gonna all be great.

It seemed like a lot of people were hoping Santana was going to come out of the closet. Was there any thought of that?
No. When we (co-creators Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan) talked about doing that story and about her really being gay, it was a big conversation because it’s a big deal. She’s a major character. We knew we were going to get some blowback, frankly. I think we’re all very progressive but the reality is a lot of the country isn’t as progressive yet. But we wanted to take the risk because it was a group of people that weren’t truly identified on the show. We were so respectful on the Kurt story and really have focused so much on that and the character and making the sure the struggle of a gay teen in Ohio was looked at. We wanted to do the same as this one. We knew it was going to take some time. We didn’t wanna rush it. We didn’t have the time to really tell that story. I’m not gonna just have her come out in the last scene of the episode. That’s a big deal. We dedicated two episodes to Kurt coming out and then it went on. We want to give it some time so we’re giving it some time and we’re going to get into it next season.

What did you wanna say to fans who watched the finale?
The episode’s first cut was 20 minutes long so we had to cut it down to really make it work. That episode was really about these kids and seeing them really out of their league and putting them in a big city and really wanting to get that Rachel/Finn thing going. I think a lot of people were let down by like, What happened to Will and Emma? What happened to Brittany and Santana? What happened to Quinn? There was a Will and Emma scene but we had to cut it for time. The Will and Emma people can rest assured that they’re both single now and he’s helped her get better. There will definitely be some hot action there.

You can’t please everyone.
No. But I wanted people to understand that it wasn’t like we forgot everyone: the story of the episode was the Rachel and Finn story. That was the driving story. It was about learning like, Look, you wanna win so badly that you wanna be a Broadway figure so badly that you’ll turn your back on everything. Then the moment you decide not to, you lose the championship because of it. You don’t make the top 10 because you decided to kiss instead. At the end of the day, even Rachel, who was so determined at winning, is good with it. And Kurt is good with it. Everyone understands that being together is more important than anything else.

I heard that you all are hiring new writers. So it will be more than just you, Ryan and Ian?
Yep. We’ll have an actual television writing staff like other places do. We’re trying to get a lot of quirky people and interesting people and people that are not what you’d expect. I think it’s gonna help us to get some fresh voices. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still our show.

So when will you start breaking stories for season 3? Have you even thought about that?
Oh, absolutely. We start at the end of June.

Can you give any kind of tease for season 3?
If I could, I would. Just know that we have some really great, big ideas. I am under the opinion it will be the best season.

Lauren Potter and Jane Lynch's Not Acceptable R-word PSA

Naya Rivera: I feel lucky to play 'Glee's' Santana‎

"I didn't know where they were going to take the story line, but I ended up having a lot of fun playing with it," she tells the L.A. Times. "I've gotten to show off different sides of who Santana is, and I've gotten an overwhelmingly great response."

"Who knows if the writers would have taken that relationship so seriously if there hadn't been such an outpouring for them to get together," she says.

"I didn't think it was going to go this far," she says of Santana's self-discovery. "But I'm glad that it did, because there have been a lot of fans who have expressed that they've been going through similar situations in their lives. I've heard from girls that are in high school, they're 16, 17, and they're like, 'I came out to my mom,' or 'I came out to my friends, and thank you for helping me do that.'"

Of course there are others, like former "Saturday Night Live" comic Victoria Jackson, who have criticized "Glee" for its gay themes and characters.

"We just laugh it off," says Rivera. "Everyone's entitled to their opinions, but I know that for those of us who play gay characters on the show, we feel very happy and honored and lucky to be a part of that. I think the show is just as much revered for that as we are chastised, so it evens out."

Glee Stars on Their Characters' Summer Plans

Matthew Morrison: “Mr. Schue is single now so I think he would be focused on the glee club, gearing up some set lists and curriculum for next year. Maybe he’d also go to a singles’ resort or some all-inclusive resort to meet the next Mrs. Schuester,” he said with a laugh. “Personally I would want to hang out with Jane Lynch. But I don’t think Mr. Schuester would want to hang out with Sue Sylvester. I think Mr. Schuester would want to hang out with Emma (Jayma Mays) for the summer. Obviously.”

Lea Michele: “Rachel would definitely be working at the community theater, probably doing one of their musicals that they do in the town,” the actress said. “And hanging out with Mercedes and Kurt.”

Chris Colfer: “Kurt probably will develop his relationship with his boyfriend more,” he said. “He did say that he was going to write a musical about Kate Middleton’s sister, so I hope that happens.”

Amber Riley: “I think [Mercedes] has a summer job. I want to say she works in a salon or in a dress shop. And she’d spend her free time with Kurt because she missed him while he was at another school.”

Naya Rivera: “Hopefully [Santana] won’t get anymore plastic surgery! She’d probably go visit her people in Puerto Rico and she’d definitely try and take Brittany. For sure.”

Heather Morris: “I imagine Brittany always taking a family vacation; maybe they go hike the Grand Canyon.”

Cory Monteith: “Finn would go fishing.”

Jane Lynch = Emmy host?

From Deadline.com

"Fox is taking a page from CBS' playbook, going with a standout performer on a hit comedy series as the host of the Primetime Emmy Awards. After How I Met Your Mother co-star Neil Patrick Harris garnered rave reviews as Emmy host of the CBS-carried ceremony, word is that Fox is close to locking Glee co-star Jane Lynch for emcee duties this year. Under the recently signed new eight-year deal between the Big 4 broadcast networks and the TV Academy, the Emmy Awards will air on Fox this September, with Mark Burnett executive producing. Lynch already did a good job for Fox hosting the network's upfront presentations for the past 2 years as her Glee character Sue Sylvester."

Glee Adds Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark Writer

Glee goes to Broadway in its season finale, and it looks like the show is bringing someone back with it. Deadline reports that writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa -- who most recently rewrote Julie Taymor's book for Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark -- will join Glee's writing staff next season, a notable development since the show has this far generated two years' worth of scripts from only three staff writers: Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan, and Brad Falchuk. In the meantime, Aguirre-Sacasa has also been signed to script the remake of Carrie, which hopefully won't culminate with a prom performance of Rebecca Black's "Friday" (though that might be equally frightening). Glee's Ashley Fink Talks Kissing Mark Salling

She may be somewhat of an outcast at William McKinley High School but we don't feel too bad for Ashley Fink -- she gets to make out with the 'Glee' club's resident hottie, Mark Salling. And according to Fink, who plays Lauren Zizes on the hit show, it ain't too shabby.

"I'm really taking one for America," Fink joked to E! Online. "It's grueling, it's physically taxing ... It's amazing. I'm not going to lie."

Jonathan Groff Talks GLEE In New Interview with Vanity Fair

Brett Berk: Truly. Last week, your bad attitude led to fisticuffs between you and Finn. In a real fight, how would you take him?
Jonathan Groff: I think I would hit him down low. I think if I rocked him from the bottom, he would fall over, and all of that weight would fall on top of him. I also don’t think he’s very quick on his feet, so I think that going for the legs and the mid-section would be the best.

Brett Berk: Speaking of taking one of the Glee boys, I happen to think that almost all of the guys on the show are adorable. If you were a 14-year-old boy again, right now, which one would you have as the wallpaper on your iPhone?
Jonathan Groff: I’d probably have Chris Colfer, because I think he’s so brave on the show, and the things he’s doing are setting such a great example for young people, gay or straight, in terms of educating them and putting it out there. And in real life, he’s such an amazing person. He’s handling his fame and his success and his…responsibility in such a classy way. I really admire him.

Naya Rivera Talks Santana Lopez Spoilers with AfterEllen

AE: We all know that Santana is a girl who will do anything to get what she wants but it looks like she’s not going to get Brittany.
NR: Yes.

AE: How is she going to move on from that? Can she and Brittany still be friends?
NR: I feel like they still are friends and in the prom episode that just aired … that was right after she sang "Songbird" to her and continued to pour her heart out to Brittany and still didn’t get what she wanted. I think they’ll always be friends and I think that Santana values Brittany’s friendship above everything else, which is the softer side of [Santana]. I would like to see her find love outside of Brittany and I think that we had to deal with the hurt of being rejected to get to the softer side of this really hard and bitchy character.

AE: So you don’t want to see Santana play the field a little bit?
NR: I want to see her get in a relationship. I think that that’s something that hasn’t been explored. We’ve never seen her in a relationship with anybody and we’ve never really seen her give herself up and put someone else’s needs before her own and I think that would be a cool thing to explore.

AE: I personally don’t want Santana to get too soft. I like bitchy Santana, too!
NR: Oh no! Trust me, Santana will never get too soft and that’s the best thing about her. Ryan Murphy loves that she’s a raging bitch and I love the fact that she just says whatever she wants but people get it. It’s not that she’s mean for no reason. She gets what she wants.

AE: Your scenes with Heather Morris are just amazing. Do you spend a lot of time talking about how you’re going to play your scenes or is it more organic than that?
NR: It’s really just our chemistry and I think that we kind of feed off the same things and portray those things the same way. We just gel really well when we work together and I think that’s how ‘Brittana’ took off so much in the first place is that we have a really great working chemistry.

AE: Would Santana ever go back to boys even if it were in a conniving fashion or is that completely in her past?
NR: At this point….look…[laughs]…Santana will use anything that she needs to use if it’s a dire enough situation but I think we all know now that the boy thing is not where she’s truly at.

AE: We have two episodes left in the season. What is coming up for Santana?
NR: I will say that I love the last episode because it’s that end-of-the-season thing and there’s closure with every coupling and love triangle; there’s a resolution. There’s a resolution between Brittany and Santana and you get where they stand at that point. I think it’s sweet and everyone will be happy with where they go.

Glee: New Lesbian Storyline?

We all know that Ryan Murphy loves pushing the envelope on Glee, but is he even up for a girly-girl ménage à trois rockin' McKinley High. At least one the stars characters wouldn't mind the kinky set-up.

Could Rachel (Lea Michele) give up on Finn (Cory Monteith) and just start switch-hitting Quinn? How about Tina—Harry is a pretty and all, but...

And would resident maybe-they'll-be-a-couple someday Brittany (Heather Morris) and Santana (Naya Rivera) want to add a third into their mix? Read on to find out who's up for throwing a trio-filled twist into her love life...

Ashley Fink, who plays Puck's current main squeeze Lauren Zizes, says, why not!

"I'm pretty much still into Puck, but I'd definitely want in on some of the Santa and Britney action!" Fink told me this weekend at 102.7 KIIS FM's Wango Tango concert at the Staples Center. "I want me some of that."

She added with a big smile, "If two's great, three is definitely better."

Until then happens (if it ever does, for that matter), Fink has the upcoming Glee 3-D movie to worry about.

"They're going to shoot one of concert shows," she said. "I just hope my dance moves look good in 3-D."

Lady Gaga Would Love to Guest Star on 'Glee'

Lady GaGa is urging "Glee" bosses to give her a role in the hit musical series so she can show off her acting talents. Producers have used a number of the pop star's hits on the show, about a group of singing high school students, and even used her acceptance anthem "Born This Way" as the theme for a special tribute episode last month.

Now GaGa is dreaming of the day she is invited to film a cameo on "Glee". She says, "I would love to. We should just work it out. I know that they're doing some more music on the show soon - and they just did the amazing Born This Way episode. So I would love to."

Jenna told HollywoodLife.com: "You know it was really, really sad. Any kind of death is sad and it brings you back to a place you don't really want to go. So it kind of affects everybody"

"It was really hard but the episode is done really, really well. It was really sweet and I think people will appreciate it. It was done in the right way. I think they'll be sad but I think they'll feel for the characters who will be affected by it."

She added: "Any death, and especially on 'Glee' [since] you don't expect something like that so for that to happen... I think fans will be shocked a little bit, and not expect anything at all... I think fans will like it."

Matthew Morrison to Sing His Own Song on Glee Finale

Morrison's character Will Schuester will perform the sweeping ballad, which was co-written by American Idol Season 8 winner Kris Allen along with Andrew Frampton and Steve Kipner, alone on a stage in an empty theater -- a far cry from the big dance number that the series had originally planned -- in a scene directed by Glee creator Ryan Murphy.

Morrison told THR that, after he first approached Murphy about including one of his songs in an episode, the producers opted to change the scene into something bigger. “It was going to be just a big dance piece with me doing this big dance number,” Morrison said. “But they said, ‘We want you to sing it and make it a big moment.’ ”
