Ryan Murphy Talks Recent Gay Teen Suicides

In light of the multiple gay teen suicides this week, Ryan is making it a point in his show to showcase the beauty of tolerance and how it affects the youths of today. In a new interview he explains:

"[Tolerance] is a very powerful thing to write about because this week alone three gay teenagers have killed themselves and committed suicide, and we just got asked today to do a PSA on it because it's becoming such an epidemic because of the bullying."

But along with the PSA (which we are so thrilled they are doing, BTW), Ryan intends on tackling the subject with the character of Kurt, starting with this coming Tuesday's episode. He explains:

"The core of the show is really about tolerance. I think that's the legacy of Glee more than anything else. So as we began the year we were very conscious of that. Last year the throughline was about teenage pregnancy. And the throughline this year is really about Kurt (Chris Colfer) and his feelings about tolerance, not only in high school and in the world, but also the ripple effect it has on everybody around him."

Hayley Williams On 'Glee' Salute: 'I Felt Like I Was Levitating'

Paramore's 'The Only Exception' featured on Britney Spears episode.

In the hours following the episode, Paramore's Hayley Williams took to her Twitter account to praise Michele's performance, and say that she was "so humbled" to have one of her band's tunes on the show.

Of course, MTV News wanted to get Williams' take on all this "Glee" madness. Given how nuts everything has been since the episode aired, it took her about a day to get back to us. And, not surprisingly, when she finally did, she still felt like she was floating on cloud nine.

"I can't even describe how I felt hearing one of our songs on a hit show like 'Glee,' " she wrote in an e-mail. "Lea Michele sang it beautifully, and I liked what she changed vocally. I felt like I was levitating off of my friend's couch trying to understand it was really happening!"

Ryan Murphy: Sam is definitely NOT Kurt's love interest!

So now that we know Kurt's story arc is the major throughline for the new season, how about we clear up the conflicting rumors that either Chord Overstreet (Sam) or newcomer Darren Everett Criss (Blaine) will play his new love interest?

Hope you're on your knees because...Praise "Grilled Cheesus!" Finally, an answer!

"It's definitely not Chord," Ryan tells me of Kurt's love interest. "It's not Chord. And the new character [Darren Criss] is certainly an option. I'm not sure how soon I want to [reveal] that information. because it's such a big storyline of the year—I want there to be some surprises. But Darren has a major, major arc. He sort of becomes Kurt's mentor and then maybe love—he had to leave his own school because of bullying and goes to an all-boys academy and finds acceptance because that school has a no-bullying, zero-tolerance policy. So Kurt really admires him and respects him. He plays someone who's one year older than Chris' character, so he's the old pro."

And in case you hadn't heard, Darren's now a clean-cut pro, too! When I (jokingly) asked if Darren Criss recently chopped off all his long, moppy locks because the budget couldn't support enough hair gel for him and Matthew Morrison, Ryan audibly gasped:

"What?! I have not heard this! Did he really cut off all his hair? He did not do that for the show! But we cast Darren for his exceptional voice and talent, so if he shows up with a bald head, I guess I'll have to make it work…As for Matthew, you know, he just uses Lubriderm, so that won't break the bank." Love. It.

Charice: I want to sing Christina Aguilera and Michael Jackson for 'Glee'

When it comes to performing on "Glee," Charice's character Sunshine Corazon has already gotten some great songs. She performed a duet of "Telephone" with Lea Michele and a phenomenal rendition of "Listen" as a solo. Both songs exploded on the iTunes charts immediately following her "Glee" debut last week.

So which artist would Charice like to tackle next? "Sunshine would love to dance. I would love to try a Michael Jackson song. I also haven’t covered any Christina Aguilera, but I love her."

For now, show creators have planted the seeds for an entertaining rivalry between Sunshine and Rachel Berry. But with such a huge voice, the Filipina star could find a new enemy in yet anothr New Directions member. "Mercedes is really great – I could be her rival too," Charice stated in an interview this week.

Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on Glee

Here are the latest spoilers from Ausiello!

Question: Let’s assume Chord Overstreet’s Sam is not a love interest for Glee’s Kurt, and Darren Criss is. Well, who will Sam be paired with? —Jeff
Ausiello: I’m hearing single mom Quinn. But if you’ve got a better idea, the comments section below has your name written all over it, Jeff.

Question: Is Mike Chang going to get a solo on Glee? I’m swooning over his dancing (and now his abs!), but a solo would just be the icing on the cake. —Kraig
Ausiello: He’ll get the next best thing to a solo in episode 4: a duet with Tina!

Question: With the Britney tribute episode and talk of possible Michael Jackson or Bruce Springsteen episodes, when the hell are the folks at Glee going to do a second Madonna episode? I want my Madge! —Dan
Ausiello: Not this season, apparently. Word on the street is that the Super Bowl episode will be the last tribute we’ll see this season. Of course, given the record ratings the show got with last night’s Britneypalooza, the word on the street could change, and fast.

Question: Any truth to the rumor that Glee‘s post-Super Bowl tribute episode will be a sequel to Britney/Brittany? —Taylor
Ausiello: If by “any truth” you mean “no truth whatsoever,” yes. Otherwise, not so much. BREAKING GLEE NEWS: Sources confirm to me exclusively that Charice will reappear in episode 7!

E News: Before They Were "Glee" Stars

Find out what Lea Michele, Cory Monteith and the rest of the "Glee" gang did before starring in the hit TV show.

Dijon Talton addresses the elephant in the room...

Since the new season of Glee has started, one former Glee member has been noticeably absent.

Today, Dijon Talton (who played Matt Rutherford "Shaft" for 19 episodes on Glee last season) sent a tweet discussing him no longer being on the show:

"Hey guys, as many of you have heard, inquired or assumed I will no longer be on GLEE, for reasons that are completely out of my control. However, I will always love, appreciate and cherish my GLEE family and the incredible experience/journey we experienced together... I wish each of them individually and as a unit, nothing but the best! Also, Thank you all for all your love and support, words can't express my gratitude! Love u all... God Bless..."

Harry Shum Jr.: Lea Michele is NOT a diva!

Harry did an exclusive interview with Hollywoodlife and he talked about Lea's diva rumors:

Harry is leaping to Lea’s defense in the wake of co-star Amber Riley’s recent criticisms — and there may be drama between two other Glee stars. Find out who!

Reports of bad behavior have been swirling about Glee star Lea Michele pretty much since the series started last year. However, in the wake of fellow castmate Amber Riley’s complaint that she’s “always ordering everyone around”, another co-star, Harry Shum Jr., is swearing up and down that she’s NOT a diva!

"You know, it's all rumors. You see these magazines and they literally fabricate stuff out of nothing, the 28-year-old dancer told HollywoodLife.com exclusively at the Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock event in Los Angeles Sept. 27. "We sit there and laugh at it, we crack jokes about it. You can’t really believe all that you read."

But surely the rumors don’t come out of NOWHERE? Amber, 24, wasn’t provoked to say, "She's always ordering everyone around, demanding a particular outfit or a particular food at the snack table," without reason — right?

"We have a group of people that is drama fee,” Harry insisted. “When we hear about these things, we just laugh it off. It’s all love!"

But who may not be Mclovin each other? We spied Cory Monteith hanging by himself solo at the event, texting up a storm, while Mark Salling, Harry and Ryan Cabrera all palled around separately in a corner. In fact, Mark, 28, brushed right past Cory, also 28, without saying a word!

Will Glee Tackle Michael Jackson or Bruce Springsteen for their post Super Bowl show?

Word on the street is that, in Glee‘s post-Super Bowl episode, the McKinley High kids will be singing either the songs of Michael Jackson or Bruce Springsteen. Which seems win/win, right? They’re both musical icons with back catalogs overflowing with hits. But which would be the better choice? Figuring that out, as Sue Sylvester would say, is hard. Luckily, we’re here to help with a handy-dandy list of the pros and cons of devoting an hour to one vs. the other.

Jacko

Pros: The diversity of his song styles would lend itself brilliantly to Glee‘s variety of singers. For instance, soft-spoken Kurt could whisper his way through “Billie Jean,” jocks Finn and Puck could muscle their way through “Beat It,” and powerhouses Rachel and Mercedes could—no, would—kill MJ’s once-upon-a-duet with sis Janet, “Scream.” Plus, you just know Mr. Schue would do a mean moonwalk.

Cons: Since the Super Bowl is in February, not October, chances are slim that we’d get “Thriller.” And I want “Thriller.” Badly. Also, since he’s passed on, do we forget about all the child-molestation allegations now? Is that, like, a rule?

Bruce

Pros: Not only could a Bruce-centric episode possibly bring gridiron fans to the show in a way that (sorry) the football team getting down to “Single Ladies” never could, a “Born in the USA” cover could easily be 2011′s classic-rock answer to “Don’t Stop Believin’.” (And c’mon, Finn is pretty much made to fill out Springsteen’s jeans.) Moreover, Puck could show off his softer side on “I’m on Fire,” “Dancing in the Dark” could take on a whole new meaning with daffy Brittany performing it, and can’t you just picture the flashbacks to a teenage Will belting out “Glory Days”?

Cons: How many Springsteen songs do you really know? I mean, quick—can you hum “Streets of Philadelphia” or “Secret Garden” from his
greatest-hits CD? I, um, can’t.

First look at Britney Spears on Glee

This is a new promo with a small glimpse at Britney Spears!

Selena Gomez: I want to be on "Glee"!

Selena Gomez has said that she'd love to join the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow and Britney Spears by making a cameo appearance on hit US show Glee.

Speaking to breakfast TV show Daybreak, Selena said that she'd be interested in joining the cast of the show and that she already has a role in mind.

"Yes, I would! (be interested) Who wouldn't? That show is so awesome. They are so funny! I love Lea Michele and Cory Monteith... I would love to play a nerdy role, that would be so much fun!" she said.

Selena also gushed about her love for Cheryl Cole saying, "I have listened to Girls Aloud but I fell in love through Cheryl, her music and her solo album. I'm a major Cheryl Cole fan, I'd love to work with her; that would be such a dream."

Lea Michele endorses Justin Bieber on show

The rumors about teen singing sensation Justin Bieber appearing on "Glee" probably won't stop until it actually happens, so until then get ready to listen to a number of people talking about how amazing / awesome / wonderful it would be to see the "Baby" singer belt some big numbers out at McKinley High.

One person seems especially excited about the prospect of Justin on the show -- Lea Michele. Here's what the actress had to say over the weekend to E! News:

"I don't know about Justin Bieber coming on the show, but he would be awesome. But I will tell you this—breaking news from Lea Michele!—we have an Academy Award winner coming on Glee in the next few episodes that is not Justin Bieber."

Of course, someone should probably tell Lea Michele that her "breaking news" is not exactly "breaking" if she is talking about Gwyneth Paltrow with the scoop, as the "Shakespeare in Love" winner was announced for a role last week.

John Stamos talks 'Glee', Lea, Jane, Britney etc

John Stamos has an appointment on Glee this week.

In the Fox hit comedy's second episode of the season, airing Tuesday (8 p.m. ET/PT), the actor (ER, Full House) begins his recurring role as Dr. Carl Howell, who is responsible for the show's anesthesia-inspired Britney Spears dream sequence. Stamos, 47, recently chatted about all things Glee.

Gleerave: "I hate to be one of the actors who gushes about every single thing they do, but honestly, it's so much fun. The kids are really funny, really smart."

First day on the job: "My first day was my part of the fantasy sequence, and Heather Morris (Glee's Brittany) is doing a full-on Britney (Spears) sort of stripper dance on me. She was in a full Britney outfit from Toxic."

First big scene: "I'm still me, but then you're dropped in this world of Glee— just lifted up and dropped into the school. Halfway through this scene, you look around and go, 'Wow, I've been dropped into Glee.' "

No Britney access: "They had these wristbands. It was a big security day. Very secretive, but apparently she was great and very funny."

On playing Dr. Howell: "He's very different than anybody I ever played. He's sort of the coolest guy in a really, really small pond. So that gives me a chance to be sort of dorky. I think he thinks he's a lot cooler than he is, which is fun to play. He's a 'bro' guy; he hasn't even graduated to 'dude' yet. He's like, 'Let's talk this out, bro to bro.' He's got a lot of enthusiasm. In other shows, they wanted me to really be the cool guy or the charming guy. This guy wants to be that guy, but he misses the mark."

Practice makes perfect: "My secret (on Glee) is that — they don't even know and I hope they're not reading this — I faked I was sick for a week and I went to my singing coach and sang every day. Then they said, 'Come in for the dance,' and I was like, 'I'm sort of sick today, can you just show me?' I videotaped it, and I rented out a studio, and I've been going there every single night. I'm not a natural singer and dancer. (Stamos has starred on Broadway four times and has played drums for the Beach Boys on and off for the past 25 years.) I can get to the finish line, but it takes me a lot longer than everyone else."

He's still not a doctor: "I learned the same amount on Glee as I did on ER being a doctor. Actually, it's way worse. I was used to ER, where they are so specific and you have to do this exactly right and hold the needle. Here, I asked if I should be wearing gloves and they were like, 'Ah, who cares? It's a comedy.' "

On Jane Lynch: "I didn't want to know about her Emmy (for playing cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester). I wanted to know about her wax figure, and she was saying that was pretty weird. I told her I go down to Hollywood's (Madame Tussauds) Wax Museum and I rehearse my lines with her wax figure. She's fun."

Leader of the pack: "Lea's (Lea Michele, who plays Rachel Berry) got so much going on. The whole world is grabbing at her. We didn't really spend too much time talking, and then I had my first scene. I had a bunch of dialogue, and I felt like I was kind of dropped in. I was sweating, trying to remember my lines, and she was so sweet. She sat behind the camera and gave me this big smile. Without saying anything, (she) made me feel really safe. She's sort of the leader of the kids. She really communicated that 'You're safe, we're happy you're here.' It was a really nice moment. I won't forget it."

Lea Michele: I will go naked for PETA!

According to a new interview with RadarOnline, Lea Michele may go naked for PETA. But only if they asked.

"I don't think we need to see a billboard of me naked to know I am anti-fur," Lea Michele tells RadarOnline.com tonight at the PETA awards. "But if they asked I would probably do it."

“If they asked I would probably do it,” Lea Michele commented about PETA’s famous campaign.

Fans would probably be very excited to see what her photo shoot would look like, so it wouldn’t be too surprising if PETA ends up giving her a call.

Darren Criss joins 'Glee' as... Kurt's new bf!

The plot surrounding who’ll be playing Kurt’s first boyfriend on Glee is thickening: Actor-singer-songwriter Darren Criss—best known to TV audiences as Matt Dallas’ bro on Eastwick—has landed the much-talked-about new gay role on the Fox phenom.

But will he have eyes for Kurt? Maybe. Maybe not. Allow me to explain…

Per a Glee source, Criss’ character, Blaine—a cute and charismatic gay student from a rival Glee club named the Dalton Academy Warblers—will maintain a strictly platonic friendship with McKinley High’s most out and proud pupil. But could that change as the season progresses? Yes, it could.

Sounds to me like series creator Ryan Murphy is keeping his options open.

Ever since Murphy announced that Kurt would be getting a love interest in season 2, speculation about the identity of his suitor has run rampant. The casting of pretty boy Chord Overstreet led some to speculate that his quarterback character Sam would play that role, a theory Chris Colfer all but shot down when he informed us that there’s no sign of romantic tension between Sam and Kurt in the first four episodes. “Maybe it is too obvious,” he theorized. “Our writers have a way of avoiding the obvious and throwing curveballs.”

In addition to his TV work, Criss has built quite a Web following as a member of the University of Michigan theater company Team StarKid. The group’s spoof, A Very Potter Musical, went viral and turned Criss (who plays the title role) into a bit of an Internet star.

Mike O'Malley Interview with OUT magazine

Glee has broken the television mold in more ways than one. Its portrayal of what at first appeared to be a homophobic father (named Burt) rejecting his musical-loving gay son (yep, named Kurt) ultimately painted a picture of unconditional parental love. On the cusp of the September 21 second season premiere, we caught up with Mike O’Malley, the Emmy-nominated actor who plays the anything-but-stereotypical father tugging at our heart.

Out: What inspired you when you were creating this character. Do you know men like Burt?
Mike O’Malley: I grew up in New Hampshire, which is a very American place to grow up in the sense that people raise families and they go to their jobs and participate in their community. It wasn’t foreign to transport my experience in New England to Ohio. Burt went to McKinley High -- actually, I don’t know if that’s established in the script anywhere…

But it’s true for you at least.
Yes. He’s a guy that stuck around the town. Life has handed him a fair amount of sadness. He’s been affected by the loss of his wife, and he wishes that she were there to witness the ups and the downs that Kurt is going through. It’s hard to talk about things that happen off-screen, but in my imagination I think he just loves his son and loves him despite knowing that a lot of what his son is interested in, he’s not interested in. On top of the things every teen deals with, Kurt has an unfolding identity that Burt knows closed-minded people are going to ridicule him for. That’s hard. It’s hard to see your kids go out and get beat up by the world. Just loving your kid is the first thing. Parents love their children in a way that no one else does. Some have a harder time explaining that than others. I think that he begins to surprise himself because his son really needs him to be there in a way that no one else can be there.

We love your TV son, too. What’s Chris Colfer like?
Chris Colfer is just a great guy. He’s hilarious, he’s interested in people, he’s thoughtful. He’s his own guy. He doesn’t need any lessons from anybody about how to act. When you’re in scenes with him, it’s really quite remarkable because his emotional life is so available to him. You’d have to be an uncompassionate person to not respond to the behavior he’s giving to you.

So how do you feel about being one of the first actors portraying a parent on TV who, even if he doesn’t understand his gay son, is at least trying?
As an actor, you just want to get good material. When I began to read the first 20 pages of the first episode, I thought, I don’t want to play they guy who’s like, “No son of mine is going to be gay.” And, by the way, that’s not because it’s not an authentic reaction that I’m sure many people have had, you know what I mean?

Oh, I do.
What I do think is important is that we’re portraying a relationship that even if one person in the audience has had, it then becomes easier for people to understand. One of the great things about scripted TV is that characters have experiences that you can see the pros and cons of. We’ve seen this character act somewhat opposite of the way we thought the stereotype of this guy would be.

Even if you didn’t take home the statue, congrats on the Emmy nomination. From a gay audience’s perspective, it’s nice to see that this role in particular is being recognized.
As an actor, you realize that it’s all in the writing. What you’re always looking for is a role where you can display your skills. To be on a show where people are watching and it’s popular and you’re being recognized for your contribution to that show, it’s as awesome and wonderful as you’d think. It’s better than being told you suck.

What was your reaction when you first read Kurt’s coming out scene?
My first reaction when he came out was, “Awesome!” I didn’t think that’s where the story was going, and that’s why it surprised the audience. You think, here’s a guy who played football and he watches Deadliest Catch and he thinks, Look at my gay son who’s such a disappointment. But in fact he says, “I’ve known for a long time and I just wanted you to tell me the truth.” I think that’s really important for gay teens. You don’t want people’s parents out there saying, “You’re gay!” because then they don’t own their own identity. Let somebody tell you who they are whether or not it’s obvious. It’s a classic scene of a kid thinking he’s doing a good job at lying and a parent seeing right through it. I don’t know if it’s stated explicitly in the script but Chris’s character is just 15 years old. You’re just beginning to enter into an adolescent life where he’s going to have a sexual identity. It’s one thing if my kid wants to watch The Sound of Music over and over and over when I want to watch the football game. Now he wants to kiss boys. That’s a whole new conversation.

Do you have any speculation for Kurt’s much-anticipated love interest this season?
I don’t know how they’re going to write it but that’s a whole new frontier. It’ll be interesting. Sex education in this country is about prevention of STDs and prevention of pregnancy. Any parent or educator that says it’s about anything different is not telling the truth. If people really wanted kids to have sex, they’d give them a manual on how to do it well.

Like, instructions?
Yeah. Can you imagine if part of a class was like, “We’re so glad you kids are having sex now. It’s a beautiful, wonderful thing. So, we’re going to show you a couple diagrams, a few videos, maybe focus on these areas…” But they don’t. It’s messy to people. They don’t want to think about their kids as sexual beings, so I’m sure it’s going to come up this season. It’s rich material.

Were there any Kurts in your high school?
Was there anybody out in my high school? No. I went to an all-boys Catholic high school. There were a couple of brothers who were out.

Brothers? Oh, you mean…
No, there weren’t. I’m joking. I went to high school from `80 to `84 so we were just turning the corner on even being aware.

Finally, if Burt and Kurt did a father-son duet, what would it be?
It would be great it we found out that Burt was in a barbershop quartet. My father’s been in a barbershop quartet since the early `70s. There’s a whole underbelly of Americana that is barbershop quartet. It needs to be exposed.

And you think Glee should tackle that?
Why shouldn’t it? One of the things that I think has been awesome about Glee is that it also shows to a lot of teens that their parents are fully human with their own struggles and emotions. Getting people to get along -- parents and children, people in communities -- getting people to understand one another and become more tolerant, it does have an impact.

The TV show has enjoyed phenomenal success in the US and UK since it first aired, also winning a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy and four Emmy Awards.

The second season will see popstar Britney Spears and actress Gwyneth Paltrow make special guest appearances, and speaking at the UK premiere of his new movie Eat Pray Love, director Murphy said he is now being approached by a lot of celebrities.

"I get calls all the time," he said. "I got a call driving down here 'Ricky Martin wants to be on the show. Will you meet with Ricky Martin?'

"Yeah, I'll meet with Ricky Martin."

When asked, if he would like to get Simon Cowell on the show, Murphy said he would not say no to the music guru:

"I love Simon. I am a fan of his. I've once been to his house in Beverly House, and I've been gobsmacked."
